You’ve been asked to deliver training around team development, team communication, team innovation, or team conflict. Which assessment and training might work best with your participants?

Both programs ask participants to learn and apply new insights into people and teams. Everything DiSC® is more about understanding yourself and others. Both provide a common language for discussing differences and priorities. Five Behaviors™ is more challenging in that it asks participants to take greater risks and look a little deeper into themselves and their motivations.

Recommendations

Is your time with participants limited? Use Workplace and be sure to share how your knowledge about style distribution in the group helped you prepare for the training. Everything DiSC Workplace is the easier assessment to deliver and for participants to readily understand.

Is there a longer-term commitment to making an impact? Use The Five Behaviors: Team or The Five Behaviors: Personal Development and schedule a time to review and reflect on learning at a later date. This model is more personally challenging and teaches more about how teams function.

Do participants have experience with Everything DiSC? If DiSC is already a part of your organization’s culture, then review DiSC and do a team activity. Suggestions are at DiSC activities for teams. The DiSC model is covered briefly in The Five Behaviors: Team profile, so familiarity with DiSC may allow you to spend more time on other parts of the assessment.

Are participants part of the same team? If so, use The Five Behaviors: Team, unless their trust levels are low, then begin with Everything DiSC Workplace. If participants belong to different teams, use either Everything DiSC Workplace or The Five Behaviors: Personal Development.

Do participants have experience with The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team Model or read Patrick Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team? Continue with either Five Behaviors: Team (if part of the same team) or Five Behaviors: Personal Development (if participants belong to different teams). Remember that there is a Progress Report available for Five Behaviors: Team.

  • Deliver insights into learners’ own motivations, fears, priorities.
  • Inform learners how team members might view them.
  • Provide tips for how to work better with people of all styles and to value their contributions.
Likely takeaway from training: People differ and that’s good. Recognizing the priorities and styles of others will help me better engage with them. “I get them now.”

Rise TogetherThe Five Behaviors: Personal Development will …

  • Introduce the Five Behaviors Model and address issues of trust, conflict, commitment, accountability and results.
  • Inform learners about how their behaviors can impact their teams.
  • Ask learners to reflect on their own behaviors on their teams.
Most likely takeaway from training: There are behaviors and skills I can use to increase collaboration and effectiveness on any team. “I can have a real impact on my teams.”

The Five Behaviors: Team will …

  • Expose areas where teams could improve and where they are doing well.
  • Provide discussion items and action plans.
  • Provide a quick overview of DiSC styles.

Most likely takeaway from training: Teamwork begins with vulnerability-based trust. Finding ways to build trust and keep it has to be a team goal in order to achieve great results. “We can do even better.”
